Awesome! The best line is the bit about the fungus specializing and keeping any numerous insect from being too populous. I can see how humans spreading out into the wild darks might come upon this fungus -- the dangerous natural world pushing back...
Or a secret lab that's trying to modify the fungus to work on humans for a bio-weapon...
